Write to Listen
Hello Dear One,
I hope you’re well. If you’re not that’s ok. Really, I’m not just saying it. It actually is. It’s ok to be not ok, rather than simply say it. I’ve experienced tears, smiles, frustration and overwhelm–all in the last few days. I’m ok now, as I write to you, but I won’t always be. And that’s ok.
What writing does is help us bounce back quicker: find balance, transmute difficult emotions, obtain perspective and regain calm. It’s magic like that.
Yesterday I found a note in my journal that said ‘I felt myself disappear a little’. I was writing about a work scenario where someone else took control, recognising that I had retreated, but wasn’t comfortable with it. There are times when stepping back is the right thing for me and there are times when it isn’t. I am the only one who knows which is which. I have to tune into myself.
This week I have something very simple to share: listen to your inner voice. Ask yourself: how does this feel? Am I ok with it? If not what do I need? How can I ensure I get it? You might write about an encounter like mine, where you recognised you weren’t entirely yourself. Or something else that’s been bugging you. Remember that putting how we feel on the page can be a profound process, but we don’t always need to say profound things.
I hope it helps. Take your three things seriously: do them.
I recently picked up my phone in the morning, started scrolling and asked Alexa to turn on the radio. Why am I letting someone else speak first? My inner voice chimed. I turned off both devices and started writing. Remember that what you have to say matters. It’s your life.
Thanks for being here, and being you.
All love,
Jo
